A Rebel over Them All

It can be no other way. Of course, Lamborghini is the one to announce a rear wheel driven mid-engine sports car that hints at the experiences the construction promises. This new model is of interest to a larger market, as the price speaks to a broader segment than one would usually expect for a Lamborghini. By Rasmus Thomsen

Expectations are sky high right from the start. Lamborghini Huracán EVO RWD is, as indicated by the name, a rear wheel drive version of the mid-engine sports car Huracán; a car that, since its launch in 2014, has been amongst the most successful models on the market. Since then, Lamborghini has developed the variant Performante, from which the EVO, as well as the EVO RWD, springs. This is an evolution that has its roots in one of modern times’ absolute best sports cars. This new step in the evolution only drives by its rear wheels. As the Italians put it themselves, we are moving back to the roots, and this time, we are out to have some fun. And let it be known right from the beginning: It is equipped with multiple programs, making it possible to drift sideways, make wheel spins, or simply just rock a bit with the rear end.

Adjusted motor

The motors substantial starting point is the same as its 4-wheel driven sister – 5,204 ccm engine capacity in a V10 configuration. There would, for that matter, be no reason to change it, as it is one of the most successful constructions in motor history. No turbo or compressor charger, but instead: pure induction. A wonderful sound that culminates in 8,000 rpm with a tremendous, though controlled, blast. Different from the 4-wheel drive version, this motor is modified to perform 610 hp and 560 nm. That will get is to 100 km/h in 3.3 seconds, or 200 in 9.3. There are both factual and quality based differences – one might call them lacks – compared to its sister. The acceleration is noticeably slower, and at 150 km/h the grip is poorer due to the reduced powertrain. But with that said, it is an extremely appealing, potent, and extraordinary sports car. Let us move on to the entertainment value of a rear wheel drive.

Lamborghini at the core

Driving through the city street one needs extraordinary self-discipline to stay within speed limits. Stern slip is eminently controlled by the electronics. It is hard not to draw attention to a car that in no way aligns with the word discretion. At the same time, it is a journey back in time, and Lamborghini makes no pretence to cover the idea behind the model. And this is the exact feeling we get. The pure rear wheel drive is ideal for circuit racing, where the programs for drifting, sideways driving, come to justice. The grip might be better in a 4-wheel drive, but the entertainment value and authenticity of the rear wheel drive cannot be understated. Stern slip, screeching tires, and your stomach sent on a roller-coaster ride. This is a car for adrenalin seeking troublemakers, to use a poor and worn-out expression. And no one delivers it better than Lamborghini.

Interesting price

It may seem absurd, not to say arrogant, to claim that a car that costs more than 137,000 British pounds (before extra equipment!) has an attractive price. But that does not change the fact that the price is considerably lower than for other Huracán models. Also, there are alternative car models at this price level that are now significantly challenged. Amongst these are the Porsche 911 Turbo series. It is a different kind of car with broader applications, which makes the Huracán RWD an exciting and potent alternative. Besides, Lamborghini is famous for creating cars with a reasonable amount of equipment, which is why the price can be kept at a low. No discussion: It is a lot of money for a car. But for what this new model is, the price seems reasonable, and the entertainment value is utmost overwhelming.
