A great DJ can do more than just spin records.

How hard can it really be to put together a proper playlist? Hard! Because it’s not just about playing today’s biggest hits. THE MUSIC HAS TO BRING PEOPLE TOGETHER AND CREATE THE RIGHT ATMOSPHERE. When it succeeds, it’s phenomenal. And the BEST DJS CAN GATHER THOUSANDS - AND EARN MILLIONS - for their skills

Today’s soundtrack designers

In a world where music is not just background noise but a central element of cultural experiences, the disc jockey has evolved from being the rhythmic force behind the party to becoming the main character on stage. Previously tucked away in the corner of the nightclub, the disc jockey is now the focal point at gigantic festivals such as Coachella and Tomorrowland. DJs like the French David Guetta, the Belgian Charlotte de Witte, and the German Boris Brejcha are no longer “just” record spinners - they are global phenomena.

David Guetta has cemented himself as an unavoidable force through his ability to bridge electronic music and pop culture. From Ibiza to Miami - and especially on stages like Tomorrowland - his talent for creating a sense of community through sound has made him an icon. Tomorrowland is one of the world’s largest electronic music festivals and is held outside Antwerp in Belgium.

Boris Brejcha delivers a spectacle of colorful masks and costumes.

And he is certainly no ordinary record spinner, says French music journalist Clara Vigne, who works for Mixmag:

“David Guetta is not just a DJ - he is a catalyst for collective euphoria. When he plays, you forget time and place,” she said in an interview with Mixmag in 2023.

Another well-known name is Charlotte de Witte, who is known for her dark, minimalist techno sets. With her uncompromising expression, she has redefined techno - while also inspiring a new generation of female DJs.

She performs with an almost surgical precision, building her sets like narratives in which you feel like the main character in a film you cannot leave.

A third star is Boris Brejcha, who, with his distinctive masks, cultivates the signature genre “high-tech minimal,” combining the theatrical with the deeply musical. He fills large arenas, yet still manages to create a sense of intimacy. As Luca Ferrara, music curator at Boiler Room (an online music platform that, among other things, hosts dance music events), puts it:

“Brejcha manages what very few can: making thousands of people dance and meditate at the same time.”

The DJ as today’s composer

The modern DJ set is not just about mixing tracks - it is about designing sonic narratives. A DJ set is almost a dramaturgical work, where rhythms, effects, and transitions are used as tools to build atmospheres and take the audience on a journey.

Henrik Schwarz is a German producer and live performer. He describes the role of the modern DJ like this in an interview with Resident Advisor:

“The good DJ is like a film composer - but in real time. You can immediately see, feel, and hear the reaction of the audience and shape the music accordingly. It requires intuition and timing at an almost instinctive level.”

There is a visual dimension to today’s DJ performances that is almost as important as the sound. For the audience, it’s not just about the music - but about the overall experience. Guetta’s explosive shows, Brejcha’s masked theatrics, and de Witte’s cool presence all help reinforce the message.

“When you’re standing in the sea of people at Tomorrowland and see Charlotte de Witte alone on the massive stage - black clothing, no attitude, just complete control - you understand why this is art,” says photographer Petra van Dijk in an interview with DJ Mag Europe.

A soundtrack for our time

In a world marked by constant noise and digital overload, the DJ has become a modern high priest - someone who creates almost ritualistic moments where we can let go and feel something real.

It is no coincidence that the world’s biggest DJs today achieve the same status as pop stars and filmmakers. They create something - not just music, but atmosphere, memories, and meaning. They provide the soundtrack to our nights, journeys, and personal turning points.

David Guetta may have put it best:

“Music has the power to bring people together in a way that nothing else can.”

And perhaps that is why the DJ today is not just the center of the party - but its soul.
