How to Tie the Classic Four-in-Hand Knot

KAUFMANN presents a step-by-step guide to tie the classic Four-in-Hand knot

The Four-in-Hand knot is supposedly named after a gentlemen’s club in London, named “The Four in Hand Club”, where the knot is also said to have been invented. It’s a slightly askew and asymmetric tie knot, which works well with pretty much all shirt collars. The long and slim knot helps elongate the neck. The Four-in-Hand knot only has a few steps, and therefore it’s one of the easiest tie knots.

  1. Hold the wide end of the tie to your right. Let the wide end hang around 20 centimeters below the small end.
  2. Move the wide end once around the small end.
  3. Move the wide end upwards and move it through the loop at the neck.
  4. Hold the knot loosely and move the wide end down through the loop.
  5. Tighten the loop, slide the knot, and adjust the knot to sit below the collar
